A Calorie Fool

I wondered this in an earlier blog; have we been cursed in making the right decisions from the very start of time. Is Eve's choice to eat the very apple that she was forbidden to eat the catalyst to wrong choices in food for our whole lives.

I am starting a program, a 50 day challenge, and part of the requirements is to write down all that you eat and calculate your caloric intake. ha! I never was one for writing down what i eat, let alone the calories. One because I know I would cheat like crazy and leave out pieces. I really didnt need to see on paper how horrible I ate.

Well, with the shift in our house to eliminate sweets and snacks and infuse better choices like brown rice, lentils, beans, grapeseed oil, salmon, no meats, fruits, yada yada yada, i felt like we have been doing very good. in fact the hubby just keeps dropping weight like nobodys business. Me on the other hand still look like an oompa lumpa. So i wonder with the knowledge we have and the cooking skills we have ..... WHAT IS THE PROBLEM!

Well it turns out I am a fool...

Proverbs 12:15..."The way of fools seems right to them,..."

lets look at day ones list:
cheese
cheese
cheese
string cheese
water
water
turkey pepperoni
cheese
bagel
cream cheese

see a theme?

ha ha. not only do i make some horrible choices but i eat a boatload of cheese. and i dont eat alot of calories but i dont eat alot of wise choices either. of course day one had to be a day we spent the whole day out and at a high school alumni picnic! nothing about the day is good.

so tomorrow will be a new day and new choices. and i will give the Chef a run for his money.

Late Night Confession

Love Dare: Day 18

LOVE SEEKS TO UNDERSTAND was todays focus.
The dare: prepare a special dinner at home...and seek to gain
more understanding about your spouse.

Could 20 years from now we love one another the same. we know this is a challenge because sometime you just dont want to speak to each other. rather just hit each other in the head for acting up :) sometimes we can not lean on our own understanding, even when it comes to our spouse. This is not a two-person relationship.

We have come to learn that if we forget our
committment to God we will forget our committment to each other.

I do thank God for the blessing
of communication right now
in our marriage.
And we came together tonight to break bread as one

this was a rare occassion because we are from different worlds. as kids, my mom sat down every night and ate dinner with us. in fact i realize now she was pretty crafty in making each of us help prepare the dinner and set the table. It kept three kids busy from getting into trouble, one with the other. we may not have gotten along but we had to face each other every night at the table. the ultimate showdown as we got older. it wasnt until we got older that we were left to our own vices. since we knew how to cook, there was no excuse for going hungry.

For the Chef, he prefers to come home, wind down and eat in the bedroom. true..and i'm use to it. at first it use to hurt my feelings. But then you come to understand over time [and MANY arguments] why he functions the way he does. He grew up in a home with 8 people all fighting for space, time and attention. So to be off on your own is heaven; peace. But every now and again, I can lure him out with something good. Like a dare.....or an ultimatum...

Faith: Goodbyes

Suffering sucks. In the natural its the worst feeling ever to suffer. To go through afflictions. Spiritually though it is written that "many are the afflictions of the righteous". but it is also said that the Lord delivers us from them ALL. And I have questioned time and time again the type of deliverance that is given. Can it be death where you find the peace? And I think I know my answer...

my brothers and sisters on my dads side have a cousin who i got to meet unfortunately at the time of his mothers death a year ago. And we finally got a chance to talk through out this year. He suffered deeply and greatly. And tonight his deliverance was given. sadly in his natural life being taken. I am sad because he was so young and because I know it will hurt my family and because I know that it reminds me again of how inevitable it is.

I turned to the scriptures to find my peace and in 1 Corinthians 15, starting at verse 12 I run across "the resurrection of the dead". It talked about how when a seed is sown it does not grow up in the same shape/form it was planted..."So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;  it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body."(v.42-44)

He will/has found deliverance. I am sorry my family has to grieve again for yet another so quickly. I hate being reminded. I may not want to live forever but I want it to be long enough to see my children's children, if not a few more.

Faith: Love Thy Neighbor

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell suggests that not every decision should be based on intuition. When you have a depth of knowledge and experience in an area, you can put more trust in your gut feelings. Gladwell also cautions to beware of biases that interfere with good decision making, like stereotypes and emotional baggage.

So with that being said...today's issue: the Faith to be a good Christian neighbor when those around me clearly base their decisions on the "depth of knowledge and experience in this particularly Hispanic area". Not my knowledge and experience, but that of my new, very deceivingly quiet hispanic neighborhood with my very incredibly black husband. Yes, we moved smack dab into the middle of ice cream carts, and corn-on-the-cob carts, and sno-cone carts, and grocery carts and we have been singled out to enjoy our share from the discrimination cart.

I have experienced racism. So its nothing new. Its part of the territory when you are a mixed baby. But its so old, and off-putting because I grew up in a very hispanic neighborhood where that didnt seem to matter. But here, my good decision making is being tested daily:  hold my tongue, hold my actions, and hold my thoughts. My energies have been channeled into finding out what it takes to be a good neighbor despite the circumstances....and i think i found it!

The New Series - Faith, Food & Fitness

I just got so darn creative tonight, I am up way past my bedtime. But I finally knew what I wanted the new series to be. So here it is...Faith, Food, & Fitness. All the things I am challenged by. Some days they are all my best friends and some days I wanna kick em all to the curb. Like this week, I think I've had more ice cream floats than I've had in my whole lifetime. I am so addicted. And its 65 degrees (or less some nights) and I just cant seem to get enough. The colder it gets the more ice cream i eat! Enjoy the journey....
