Dem Bones

I wasn't looking forward to this day. Dem bones, dem bones, my babies little bones. broken and hurting. He screamed so loud and kept screaming. It was so difficult. The Chef didn't know whether to yell at, threaten or love him. It was so frustrating. But he wasn't letting the screaming go and so I knew something was up.  We showered and washed him up after having to walk 15 minutes back to the house in 100 degree weather. "someone get me a car! I really need a car.", Bean screamed. He wouldn't lift the arm for nothing. We prayed and then made the decision to head to the hospital. I am glad we took him. Turns out he had a broken collar bone from falling on the handles of his scooter (turned sideways). It was excruciating. He has been so quiet since. I think he has changed a little. The six year old....this is grown up stuff here and he is handling it like a young man. He even explained to the doctor what happened all by himself and he was so articulate. I am so proud of his tolerance and fortitude.

“I have said this to
you, that in me you
may have peace. In
the world you have
tribulation; but be of
good cheer, I have
overcome the world.”
-John 16:33

Late Night Confessions

I miss my oldest daughter. Where is she, you wonder. Well what started out as a way of keeping stability in her life while her parents lives were changing, has now turned into a quest for a good education and a good social life. Yep social life. Now this is her mothers opinion only. Others may see it differently. But if you knew me, you'd know my social life until I got to high school wasn't as brilliant as I was. So we made the decision to have her stay with her grandparents to keep consistency in her life.

As she started out in her educational career she didn't quite mesh well with others. She had a big heart and always was concerned about right and wrong. Maybe overly a do-gooder. And she didn't quite manage her emotions very well. Its an honest trait. So once she started going to a school where she identified culturally and went consistently, she continued to make more friends (and excel in her academics naturally) and it was clear that the right choice for her was to keep her with her grandparents and continue her education there. Even if it meant her school was 40 miles away from where I lived. And so it goes, she stays with her grandparents on the week days. They live down the street from both the elementary and junior high schools. [And on a cooler note, they were the same schools I went to growing up.]

But it has meant being a long distance parent and seeing her on the weekends. I admit, I have dropped the ball a few times, maybe because its that out of sight/out of mind mentality. I mean who reallly does long distance mothering?? I had a lot to learn.

And now that I feel like i'm doing much better, I find that I miss her tremendously around the house. She is about to become a teenager. A young woman. Its been a challenege but she is a brilliant and endearing child. And she makes it so easy to love her. And I want her to be outstandingly successful! So for us this works. She's an A+ student and an A+ friend. And more importantly an A+ daughter. Who I love and miss.

Truth or Dare

I'm gonna tell you a crazy story, but a true one. When I was in 7th grade I used to be so mad at my mom for so many unknown reasons. It was mostly displaced because I was going through a lot on top of becoming a teenager. So when I had conferences and meetings and any kinds of parent related events, I always said my mom was too busy, had to work and then just never told her. I don't know how I got away with that. It seems, looking back, that they weren't too concerned with getting in touch with my mom. I wasn't a bad kid, just troubled and incredibly sad.

And what I was too was really embarrassed by my moms weight because I always knew they would say that's the reason why I was a fat kid. I didn't want them to know that my mom was too. And I dreaded the day I would be a parent and my kid would feel the same.

I have to say that my oldest is so not like me. And again I remind you my anger was so displaced. And I am sorry it was. I am thankful my daughter has not had to go through the same things I did. And I am thankful for her really sweet spirit.
